The search for a suitable property for a single-family house is not always easy. The location, the surroundings, the building possibilities and the price must be right. In this case, too, it remained unsuccessful until the idea came to extend the apartment house owned by the owner.

This property is located on the edge of the Wiesbaden villa area, precisely where the classic villas interlock with the disorderly, almost ruthless urban development of the 70s and 80s.

The B-plan, which was obviously drawn up for the commercial buildings facing Frankfurter Strasse, still includes our property. This means that the degree of structural use is many times higher than the existing buildings. This prompted the client to entrust us with the task of extending the building as far as possible in order to be able to use this extension as a "retirement home".

How do you deal with such a situation? To the left a washed-out concrete block in the form of a 5-storey office building from the 70s, to the right an almost filigree "garden villa" from the turn of the century and in between our rather inconspicuous post-war house, which is now to be extended by 2 storeys...

The border distances, which are already very tight in the existing buildings, have to be kept, the monument protection has to agree, because the property is located in the immediate vicinity of individual cultural monuments - the "washed-out concrete office buildings" and the back building of the "City Bowling" in the immediate vicinity on the other side are of course not considered in this assessment, the height development has to fit into the street.

After we removed the hipped roof from the model, we immediately recognised the almost classic modern form of the building. This should also be the design language for the new building, which serves as a link between the classic villa and the present. Linear, clear forms and a reduced, natural colouring are the result.

Closed perforated facades, as a counterpart to the old villas, alternate with generously glazed window areas. The basic idea was a solid pane folded to form both ceilings and walls. This folding structure is the backbone of the house, visually it looks like the only static component, the top floor seems to float or even better, to swing at this single back wall!

The extension by 2 floors did not present us with an easy task. It is nothing else than a "house on the house" what was planned, the building from the post-war period had to take enormous additional loads. The solution lies in the execution of the entire new building as a steel construction, which has the consequence that the entire extension is a pronounced lightweight.

The exterior colour and form language was also uncompromisingly continued in the interior design: open, generous floor plans; oiled, dark wooden floors; anthracite-coloured slate; a reduced steel-wood staircase; all-glass railings and a floating fireplace made of sandblasted stainless steel are decisive for the interiors.

In this case, we have not tried to separate the old from the new strictly and with all means, as it is often the case, here the existing and the new building are harmoniously fused together, as if it had never been otherwise.
